Monocle

A better, hygienic contact lens packaging

Contact lens users have to keep up daily hygiene routines to keep their eyes healthy and seeing clearly. Storage boxes need to stay clean, fluid needs to be changed daily, and the lenses need to be replaced periodically with fresh ones from the packaging. Only the most diligent users will keep this up. This packaging will help the less diligent ones stay hygienic nonetheless.

The conventional contact lens pack is a flimsy blister packaging. They are cheap to produce, but difficult to open. The storage container knows many different variations and designs, most of which have hygiene flaws; there are ridges and rough surfaces that collect dirt after repeated use. This packaging design combines the packaging with the storage container to ensure timely container replacement and easier opening while using smooth surfaces.

Since users may have two eyes with different measurements, lenses are packed individually. The same applies to the Monocle packaging. However when using the packaging as a storage container the two should be connected to distinguish the container for the left and right lenses. A sliding dovetail connection accomplishes this.

The lids of the containers are rounded squares with a smooth surface to minimize ridges and edges that collect dirt and bacteria. The square shape provides enough surface to open the container. When the contacts arrive the lids are sealed on using small mirror welded connections like on soda bottles.

The lenses arrive on the same day every month through a subscription service, triggering the user to replace their current lenses. Slide the two together, break the seals, and the contacts are ready to use in a fresh, clean container.
